MMC PORTS’ NEWSLETTER 11
How PTP's Journey Started
By the early 1990s, Johor Port was projected to face significant capacity constraints during the turn of the millennium. To deal with this
impending challenge, the Johor Port Authority searched for suitable locations beyond Pasir Gudang for port operations, and eventually
identified Tanjung Pelepas as the most viable site that could meet future cargo traffic demands. This strategic plan to establish PTP,
besides being a proactive measure to address anticipated capacity limitations, enabled the state to align with Malaysia’s broader
economic development objectives - demonstrating foresight in the nation’s maritime strategy.
The construction of PTP began in 1997, with a significant amount of the contract being awarded in July 1997 for dredging and land
reclamation, wharf construction, infrastructure development, crane procurement, and building construction. Upon completion, the official
inauguration of the PTP took place on 13 March 2000, officiated by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
His presence highlighted the port’s importance, especially in terms of bolstering the nation’s trade and economic competitiveness. The
Port Administration Building commenced operations a few months later in August 2000.
