GOING PINK:
SPEARHEADING OPPORTUNITIES FOR
ALL GENDERS IN PORT OPERATIONS
In the past, the Maritime
and Port industry has
always been recognised
as a male-dominated field,
with research from the
International Maritime
Organisation reporting
that women represent only
2% of the global maritime
workforce.
The low number of women in this industry could be attributed to women facing a multitude of unique roadblocks
compared to their male counterparts. Some of these notable challenges include acceptance, social biases,
and recognition issues where they were not treated equally as their male counterparts or discriminated against.
In cognisance of these past problems and as one of Malaysia’s leading port operators, MMC Ports as a collective
group has dedicated itself towards turning the tide on this issue, working to introduce a more inclusive and
conducive work environment for women through innovative workplace practices, dedicated training programmes,
and progressive policies.
The importance of women within our working culture cannot be understated for our future moving forward.
Maintaining gender balance in our associated ports increases flexibility and improves results, enabling a team culture
that offers diverse perspectives and solutions towards achieving our goals.
